DQ: American Soundscapes
Performed by Darling String Quartet with Dr Matt Styles (Saxophone)
Join the Darlington Quartet and saxophonist Matt Styles for an exciting evening of American music. Samuel Barber’s String Quartet Op. 11, written when he was just 26 years old, shows the young composer enlivening the Romantic traditions of his training with his own distinctive voice. The outer movements, bold and lyrical by turns, frame the famous, heart-wrenching Adagio, most often played by a string orchestra but heard here in its original form. The stage then shifts to Perry Goldstein’s exuberant Saxophone Quintet for alto saxophone and string quartet, a work whose three movements display wildly different characters and an equally wild range of musical influences, from jazz to minimalism. A daring exploration of the tonal and expressive capabilities of both saxophone and strings, this piece is an exhilarating adventure for both players and audience.
