Transformations
Performed by: Classical String Camerata and Darlington Quartet
Join the String Camerata and the Darlington Quartet for an evening of musical transformations. In his glorious Variations on a Theme by Tchaikovsky, Anton Arensky clothes a simple melody by his friend and mentor Tchaikovsky in a myriad of colourful guises. Terry Riley’s Half-Wolf Dances Mad in Moonlight, with its restless invention and primal rhythms, suggests a wilder kind of transformation. Schoenberg’s tone poem Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) is based on a text by German poet Richard Dehmel, whose philosophy of the radical reconciliation of opposites deeply inspired the young composer. This extraordinary work charts a journey from darkness into radiant light.
