The Darlington Quartet returns to the heartland of the quartet repertoire with masterworks by Beethoven and Brahms. The opus 18 quartets show the young Beethoven already beginning to redefine the string quartet, something he would continue to do throughout his life. The String Quartet No. 1 in F major, with its vigorous yet elegant opening movement, heartfelt Adagio (inspired by the tomb scene in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet) and playful finale, is no exception. Johannes Brahms, notoriously self-critical, reportedly destroyed 20 string quartets before allowing his opus 51 quartets to be published. The String Quartet No. 1 in C minor is quintessential Brahms – passionate and profound, uniting heart and intellect.
